The Lake

“Would you look at this place!” Cole called.

Ava hurried to the ridge where he stood. Loose snow rolled behind her, dropped by a dawn snowfall. Pastel-grey clouds coated the heavens, obscuring the morning sun. Behind, the forest rolled, mountains breaking the dark green swathe. The city had already faded from view.

She reached the top of the ridge and leaned against him, panting. Nathan and Lacey already stood beside him.

Her gaze fell to a half-frozen lake. It sat in a basin, stretching into the distance. Yellow-tinged crags wrapped it like the jaws of some long-dead beast, with trees jutting from their feet and more mountains beyond. Thick ice crusted the lake’s shores, but the middle shone a deep blue.

“Fancy a swim?” Cole asked. He gave her a nudge.

Ava pulled a face. “Wilf made me do enough of that.”

“There might be some way we can use it,” he continued. “Fishing, perhaps?”

“Shouldn’t we keep moving?”

Cole left the ridge and slid to where the icy shore met solid ground. Nathan and Lacey followed. Clumps of trees burst from the edges of cliffs and leaned toward the lake’s surface, their tips wobbling in a light breeze.

“I wonder if there are fish,” Nathan said. “You think it’s worth figuring out?”

Ava eyed the trees. “This weather won’t last forever, you know—and what if we’re still being followed?”

“Relax,” Nathan said. “We ain’t seen any sign of people for ages. The Frostreavers might follow Rayford by mistake, anyway.”

Ava glanced over her shoulder instinctively, but as yesterday’s meal wore off, the prospect of fish made her mouth water.

“It’ll only be for a while,” Cole said. He looked around. “I bet we’ve got enough stuff around here to make a couple of lines.” He hurried over to the trees, searching for a branch to whittle into a hook.

Unease gnawed at Ava’s insides, but she relented. What harm will a couple of hours do?

She studied the lake—its far side led to more rocky foothills, while both its edges wrapped around crags, obscuring her view. She took a seat on its edge to take the weight off her sore feet. Not travelling over winter had taken its toll on her.

Cole found some suitable sticks and got to work, using his new knife to shape them. Lacing from his shirt provided twine. “We can skirt the ice when we’re done,” he said. “Should slow anyone following us—if they are at all.”

Ava bit her lip. “You saw Vera’s face.”

Cole shrugged. “She’s good, but she isn’t unbeatable, is she? That snowfall this morning might’ve been enough to give her the slip.”

Ava caught a flash of colour far above. A familiar sensation overcame her as she spotted a dragon cutting the sky. Its aqua-blue wings lifted it on the air currents, a serpentine tail trailing behind. It flew out to the middle of the lake and began to circle.

Cole spotted it too. “You think it’s the same one?” he asked.

She watched the dragon descend, sweeping in wide arcs before making landfall on the edge of the ice.
